신상우의 그림은 현대인의 억압된 욕망을 표현한다. 일상으로부터의 일탈을 꿈꾸는 현대인의 잠재적인 욕망을 표출한 것인데, 그 욕망의 지향은 주로 유년기의 상상력에로의 회귀로 나타나고, 꿈 속 정경과 가상세계의 비전으로 나타난다. 상상력과 가상현실을 통해서나마 억압된 욕망에 물꼬를 터주는 것이다. 역동적인 화면과 패턴화된 이미지, 그리고 흡사 유아가 그린 것 같은 천진난만하고 자유분방한, 형식에 얽매이지 않은 그림이 만화 혹은 일러스트 같고, 가면 같은 인상을 주는 희화화된 표정이나 인물표현이 무슨 트럼프의 나라에 초대받은 느낌이다. 
  특히 가면 같은 인상의 표정은 현대인의 자기 정체성 문제와 맞물려 일정한 의미기능을 수행하는 것으로 보이는데, 일종의 이중성이 그것이다. 이를테면 현대인은 가면을 통해 자기 표정을 짐짓 연출할 수가 있고, 한편으로 가면 뒤쪽에 자기의 진짜 표정을 숨길 수가 있다(그 자체 현대인의 익명적 주체와도 통하는). 현실원칙과 현실로부터의 일탈을 꿈꾸는 욕망을 대비시킨 이중화면에서의 의미가, 현실원칙과 자기와의 거리감과 소외감이 또 다른 형식으로 확대 재생산되고 있는 것이다. 
 이런 가면(가면 같은 인상)도 그렇지만, 작가의 그림에 등장하는 인물들은 하나같이 다소간 과장된 제스처가 두드러져 보인다. 주제를 즉각적으로 전달하기 위한 일종의 강조화법으로 볼 수 있고, 다르게는 아이러니를 강조하기 위한 과장법의 일종으로 볼 수도 있다. 작가의 그림에는 이를테면 희로애락과 같은 현대인의 보편적인 감정이 표출되고 있는데, 한눈에도 과장된 제스처와 활짝 벌린 입, 화들짝 놀란 표정과 핑핑 돌아가는 눈동자(어지럼증을 불러일으키는)등 과장된 모습이 해학적인 인상과 함께 희로애락으로 굳어진 표정기호들, 전형적인 기호들로 인해 흡사 표정연구를 위한 실험실을 방불케 한다. 
 설핏 웃음을 자아내는 천진난만한 그림이 순진무구한 동심을 자아내며, 억압된 욕망을 분출시키고, 현실로부터의 일탈을 감행하게 한다. 동시에 이 감행, 이 도발이 현실원칙을 재확인시켜주며, 현실원칙과 (진정한) 자기와의 화해할 수 없는 거리감을 재확인시켜준다.

 Sang Woo Shin expresses the suppressed desires of modern people. He describes the modern people's potential desires of deviating from their routines.  These desires are well shown by going back to the happy childhood and visualizing what modern people want to be in their real lives. Through imagination and beautified reality in his picture, the restrained desires are satisfied. All his images-dynamic scene, patterned figures, pictures that mischievous infants seem to draw, natural and simplified smiling mask-like faces give me the impression that I am invited to the masquerade. Especially, mask-like faces represent the duality in modern people's lives.  While modern people make their pretentious facial expressions with their masks on, they can hide their genuine face under the mask. The contrast between social norms and the desires to deviate from them, represented through the divided composition of a picture, is reproduced and expanded into another form. In addition to the masked face, the characters in his works have somewhat exaggerated gestures. This seems to be the emphasis to convey the theme instantly, or the overstatement of stressing the irony. In his works, common emotions such as joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure are revealed. His works remind me of the facial expression research laboratory filled with exaggerated gestures, wide open mouths, stunned and spinning eyes, and clown-like looks. Simplified and childlike pictures evoke the happy childhood memories, erupt the restrained desires, and make it possible to escape from the routines. At the same time, this deviation reconfirms the irreconcilable distance between the genuine sef, what people really want to be and the social norms.
